Drenthe is Caregiver Friendly
On 9th September a meeting was held in the Provinciehuis, Assen as part of the Drenthe partners publicity campaign for working caregivers. Theme and titel of the meeting was ‘Drenthe Caregiver-friendly? Working together pays off! ‘
The meeting, organized by the Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands (HANNN) and the Province of Drenthe, was attended by some 50 participants including caregiving consultants, caregiving ‘brokers ‘, representatives from regional municipalities, SMEs etc. All discussed best methods to create an open dialogue between employers and employees regarding the theme of combining the heavy tasks of caregiving with a paid job.
As part of this same publicity campaign to raise awareness for employed caregivers, a survey was held amongst all employees of the Provincie Drenthe – Are you the 1 in 8?
1 in 8 Dutch people combines their job with the care for a close relative, whether it be a chronically ill spouse, a handicapped child or an ageing parent who needs help. There are some regulations to fall back on but it is most important that the situation be openly discussed with employers, employees, colleagues and family. Flexibility and made- to- measure solutions can contribute to a sustainable answer for this issue in the future.
