Both post-conference field trips will take the participants from the Drenthe conference venue to Schiphol airport, were we plan to arrive at 17.00 / 5.00 p.m. If you are planning to fly home the same evening, please allow some extra time for unexpected traffic jams.

Post-conference field trip 1 - Coastal dunes and peatlands  

This field trip will follow a route across the Afsluitdijk through the western Netherlands to Schiphol airport, all situated below sea-level. The main focus of this field trip will be on dunes and lagoonal peat history and its past, present and future management.

Post-conference field trip 2 - Land ice, drift sands and rivers 

This field trip will follow a route on the eastern side of lake IJsselmeer, the former Zuiderzee, to Schiphol airport. The Saalien push-moraine landscapes of the Veluwe, active drift sands and river management are the main topics of this field trip.

More exact itineraries and details of the sites visited on these two tours are given below. In case less then 20 people subscribe to one of the post-conference field trips, those who subscribed to the tour that attracted the fewest participants will be added to the other tour. You will be informed about this.

  1. Post conference excursion 1: Dunes and peatlands

Programme

  • Afsluitdijk, history, future management of the dike and the IJsselmeer (Zuidersea) area;
  • former island of Wieringen, geological monument, Viking museum, glacial landscape, water retention, Wieringen polder;
  • Callantsoog, narrow dune ridge, planning extra sea-defence dikes;
  • comb Dunes, old centre of Bergen, visitor centre De Hoep;
  • National Park Laag Holland - characteristic Dutch peat-lands, water management, mills, Unesco World Heritage Beemster, the deep polder drained in 1621, Unesco World Heritage Stelling of Amsterdam, visit of Fort Krommeniedijk, lake Alkmaardermeer and exhibition on earth heritage.

  1. Post conference excursion 2: Inland drift sands, big rivers, push moraines

  • peat-lands of the Weerribben;
  • river Vecht, river IJssel;
  • harbour of Kampen - start of the Baltic trade;
  • Saalien push-moraines of the Veluwe, dry valleys;
  • Kootwijk, active inland drift sands;
  • NP Hoge Veluwe, drift sand restoration;
  • big rivers Rijn and Waal.
