Geoheritage NL

30 juni 2008

Objectives

Geoheritage NL aims to promote and enhance:

  • interest in geological heritage and geoconservation and its relationships with biodiversity, cultural heritage and the landscape;
  • geodiversity and sustainable spatial planning and land development, water and nature management;
  • the standard of the earth-science profession with respect to these issues.

Structure

Geoheritage NL includes the Platform Aardkundige Waarden (PAW - Dutch Platform for Earth heritage & Geodiversity) and several Working groups Aardkundige Waarden (WAWs). They prepare discussions, organise events and produce handouts, books and other promotional material.

Geoheritage NL works in close collaboration with the professional earth-science societies KNGMG (geology), KTFG (physical geography, geomorphology), NBV (soil science), KNAG, (geography) and other non-governmental organisations that are active in landscape and nature conservation. The earth science faculties of the Dutch universities and two government-sponsored knowledge institutes are part of the PAW network, and participate in PAW meetings and working groups when necessary. Contacts with consultancies could be better.

International cooperation

In 2004, PAW and WAW established contacts with European and international organisations that are active in the fields of geoheritage and geodiversity and changed its name to Geoheritage NL, in order to emphasize international efforts and cooperation. It was decided to officially link Geoheritage NL to the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), the International Geographical Union (IGU) and the International Association of Geomorphology (IAG). Later in 2004, Geoheritage NL became the national representative of ProGEO, the association for the conservation of the geological heritage, and member of its Northern Europe working group WG3. Connections with European soil science societies ECCS and ECSSS have been established. In 2005, Geoheritage NL was invited to participate in Scape, the scientific network advising in drafting the EU Soil Strategy.

Geoheritage NL participates in the meetings of the Unesco European Geopark Network. It has established a working group to promote Unesco European Geoparks in the Netherlands and to start off a national geopark and geosites network according to the principles of this European network.

Geoheritage NL - Platform Aardkundige Waarden

The PAW meets two or three times a year to discuss developments in geoheritage and geodiversity. More than 40 organisations participate in the PAW: professional and amateur earth-science organisations, nature and landscape organisations, estate managers, land owners, museums, universities, educational organisations and various regional groups. Ministries, the IPO network of the provincial governments and government-sponsored research institutes participate in the meetings. Attendance of these organisations depends on the theme of the meeting. On average, twenty members are present at the meetings during which invited speakers give presentations and viewpoints are discussed and developed.

Geoheritage NL - Working Groups Aardkundige Waarden

Meetings, symposiums, excursions, exhibitions, and products are prepared in special working groups. The number of persons and organisations that participate varies. A working group exists for a limited period of time. At the moment three working groups are active to produce a Canon of the landscape history of the Dutch landscape for educational purposes, a working group to promote certification of the profession to improve the spatial planning quality, and a working group to promote the development of a geopark network.

Key results

 Year  Results
1997       Earth heritage is part of the Week of the Landscape organised by De Landschappen society. With more than 24 volunteers in each province field trips are organised, 10 exhibitions are held, a brochure and newspaper and magazine articles are published. One of the results of these activities was that the Werkgroep Aardkundige Waarden was established in November 1997.
1998 -2002    Interviews with members of nature and landscape organisations and government Directorates. Field discussions with estate managers of governmental, nature and landscape organisations and with colleagues to encourage them to put geoheritage and geodiversity on the agenda.
1999     On the occasion of the centennial of the State Forest Service, ten earth-heritage field trips are organised, and a paper and poster are produced.
2000          The special issue: Het Aardkundig Erfgoed van Nederland (The earth heritage of The Netherlands) of the KNAG (Royal Dutch Geographical Society) Journal Geography sold out within in 3 months
2001   Meetings with Provincial authorities, resulting in the establishment of provincial working groups on earth heritage in the framework of IPO-BOOG (InterProvincial Organisation - Soil) in 2003 and started a working programme in 2006.
2003  Earth heritage and geodiversity are explicitly mentioned in the invitation for the contest ‘3 over 30', for three spatial planning visions for three regions within the province of Limburg for the year 2030.
2003   A Dutch Manifesto Aardkundige Waarden (Geodiversity) was produced and signed by PAW member rganisations to promote government awareness. The manifesto was presented to the director Nature of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (Dutch acronym: LNV) during the KNAG meeting Waarden in Ruimte (Values in Space).
2003  A special session on Earth Heritage was held during the KNAG meeting Waarden in Ruimte; Dr Murray Gray was guest speaker and presented his book Geodiversity which was published by Wiley in 2004.
2004 The scientific document Geoheritage and Geodiversity as features of Soil heritage was produced together with a temporary European working group of experts as background document for the DG Environment preparing the EU Soil Strategy.
2004  The Manifesto for Earth Heritage and Geodiversity, signed by 11 international organisations of geomorphology, geology, soil science as well as nature conservation, is presented to the DG Environment of the EU.
2004  NBV - KTFG Symposium De bodem in Natuurontwikkeling (Soils in Nature Development) with 90 participants, generating lively discussions and resulting in some more earth scientists joining the nature-management-policy teams and the recommendation to add a special nature-development team.
2005  Earth heritage is mentioned in the Dutch national spatial-planning policy document Nota Ruimte and is part of the descriptions of some of the National Landscapes.
2005    During the Green Week of the European Commission in Brussels, for the European Federation of Geologists we prepare a stand Biodiversity = Geodiversity with many European countries contributing examples. The case studies show the links between geological history, geomorphology, soil development, quarrying and biodiversity.
2005   Invitation to present the geodiversity and soil-heritage concept at the final Scape meeting for the Soil Strategy in Iceland.
2005    Earth scientists are employed by Landschapsbeheer (Foundation on Landscape Management) and the Waddenvereniging (WaddenSea Society); geoheritage and geodiversity are gradually becoming more accepted as an integrated part of the organisational objectives of nature organisations.
2006  Geological heritage is one of the seven soil functions in the draft EU Soil Directive, including geomorphological and soil heritage; the idea of geodiversity is part of the soil policy and mentioned in the documents 1 and 6 of the Soil Strategy prepared as final documents for the discussion to be held during the follow-up.
2006  The Ministry of LNV publishes the book Bewogen  Aarde to encourage the provinces and local communities to formulate policies on earth heritage and geodiversity.
2007  Schatkamer Aarde (Heritage System Earth), a small practical handout for local government officials and spatial planners to improve the use of geoheritage and geodiversity in spatial planning projects, is produced in cooperation with the SIKB, a government-sponsored soil-certification institute.
